Work on Akhaura-Agartala railway route to begin soon: Minister

Railways Minister M Mazibul Hoque on Friday said work on the Bangladesh portion of the proposed Akhaura-Agartala railway route will begin within the next two months.

He came up with the information while talking to reporters at the Akhaura checkpost before leaving for Agartala to attend a Bangladesh-India Friendship programme of the Rotary Club of Agartala.

Mentioning that Bangladesh and India had 12 railway routes which were closed after the India-Pakistan partition, he said there is a plan to reopen those.

The second rail bridge over the Titas and the Bhairab rivers have already been completed and those will be inaugurated within a few days, he said, adding that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is supposed to join the inauguration ceremony through a videoconference.
