The government will import 50,000 metric tons more rice to meet the demand of the country.
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) on Wednesday gave the approval to import non-basmati boiled rice.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith chaired the meeting held at the cabinet division.
“The rice will be imported from M/S Siam Rice Trading Limited of Thailand with a cost of Taka 181.71 crore,” Mustafizur Rahman, Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division, told reporters after the meeting, reports BSS.
He said the rice will be imported through international quotes under the number four package of the 2017-18 financial year.
After the meeting Food Secretary M Kaikobad Hossain said the government has already procured two lakh metric tons rice and another 1.5 lakh metric tons are waiting to be offloaded from ship.
He also said the government will also import 5.5 lakh metric tons more rice within November this year as all procedures have already been completed.
