PM reaches New York to attend UNGA

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reached New York via Abu Dhabi to attend the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

An Etihad Airways flight carrying the premier and her entourage members landed at John F Kennedy International Airport at 4.50 pm New York time while she left home on Saturday afternoon.

Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States M Ziauddin and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Masud Bin Momen received the prime minister at the airport.

Local Government Minister Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Foreign Minister AHM mahmood Ali, PM’s Advisor Sajeeb Wazed Joy and State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki are accompanying the premier.

A large number of leaders, workers of Awami League’s USA chapter led by US Awami League president Dr Siddiqur Rahman and gave a warm reception to her on her arrival.

The prime minister will address the UNGA in the afternoon of September 21 and have a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres the same day.

On September 18, the prime minister will attend a high-level meeting on UN Reforms to be hosted by US President Donald Trump and a high-level meeting on Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse at UN Headquarters (UNHQ).

In the afternoon, the prime minister is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with her Bhutanesecounterpart Tshering Tobgay before attending a high-level follow-up meeting on Global Deal forDecent Work and Inclusive Growth at Convene Conference Centre.

On September 19, the Bangladesh premier along with other heads of state and governments will join the official lunch to be hosted by the UN secretary general.

The lunch will be followed by a high-level roundtable of the UN Secretary General’s High Level Panelon Women’s Economic Empowerment for Leaving No One Behind.

The prime minister will join the OIC Contact Group meeting on Rohingya Minorities at UNHQ in the afternoon. Later, she is likely to hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind KumarJugnauth.
