Today marks the 39th anniversary of the founding of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
On this day in 1978, late president Ziaur Rahman founded the party.
On the occasion, BNP and its associate bodies have taken up various programmes, including, hoisting party flag and placing wreaths at the grave of the party founder.
At 6.00am, the party flag will be hoisted atop its Nayapaltan central office and all other offices of BNP all over the country while BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with party leaders and activists will place wreaths and offer fateha at the grave of Ziaur Rahman at 9.30am.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is now staying in London, and secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in separate messages congratulated the people of the country, party leaders and activists as well as well-wishers on the occasion.
In her statement, Khaleda Zia said: “The government is jeopardising the national interest through various anti-state agreements and activities.”
She claimed that BNP is staging demonstrations to ‘revive democracy, to safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty, to protect people’s rights and to mitigate their pain and sufferings’.
