Barguna Upazila Nirbahi Officer Gazi Tariq Salman, who was sent to lockup by Chief Judicial Magistrate of Barisal in a bailable case out of personal grievance and at the behest of some local politicians, has been transferred as senior assistance secretary at the cabinet division.
An order signed by senior assistant secretary Alia Meher was issued on Monday, transferring him along with some other officials.
On July 21, Awami League suspended its Barisal unit religious affairs secretary and district bar president Obadullah Sazu for suing Gazi Tariq Salman over a trivial issue.
According to the case document, Barguna Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gazi Tariq Salman used a portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman painted by a fifth-grader in an invitation card. Tariq Salman organised a painting competition for schoolchildren and used the portrait of the student who won first prize. The plaintiff alleged that the portrait was distorted.
The UNO invited wrath of local politicians by expelling a nephew of a lawmaker in the public examinations.
Moreover, chief judicial magistrate wanted to avenge a notice issued by local administration asking him to pay due rent to the tune of nearly Tk 1 lakh for staying in the government circuit house for months.
However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, other policymakers and common people were shocked at the case against and arrest of the UNO over the trifling matter.
After having suspended, the plaintiff, on July 23, withdrew his case, saying it was filed out of a misconception.
He was allegedly ignorant of the fact that the portrait was painted by a minor boy.
Meanwhile, deputy commissioners of two neighbouring districts were withdrawn for their failure to resolve the issue and protect the UNO from harassment.
Later, the law ministry sent a letter to the Supreme Court asking it to transfer the Chief Judicial Magistrate who sent the UNO to lockup in a bilable case.
