Flood situation worsens in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Pabna

The flood situation in eight upazilas of Kurigram, four upazilas of Gaibandha and several areas of Pabna worsened further on Monday.


In Kurigram, water levels of 16 rivers including Brahmaputra, Dharala, Dudhkumar, Tista were persistently rising, inundating fresh villages in the last 24 hours.


At least 75 villages of eight upazilas in the district were marooned, leaving 1,50,000 people in scarcity of safe water, sanitation, food and shelter, witnesses said.


The Brahmaputra river is flowing two centimetres above the danger level while water level of Dudhkumor river raised 19 centimetres, Dharala river raised 26 centimetres and Teesta river raised 11 centimetres.


According to the district primary education office, a total of 67 primary schools went under floodwater.


In Gaibandha, water level of is flowing 17 centimetres above the danger level in Jamuna and Brahmaputra rivers swamping fresh villages and accelerating river erosion in Sadar, Sundarganj, Pulchari and Saghata upazilas.


Early Monday, at least 15 houses were washed away with the water due to river erosion by the Brahmaputra river, witnesses said.


In Pabna, water level of Jamuna river raised flooding fresh areas of Kajirhat, Nagarbari and Bera..  The river erosion also took a serious turn in the district following the fresh flood.
